HOW TO GET AN IMMIGRATION AND WORK PERMIT IN IRELAND

If you are a Swiss, EEA, or EU national, then you’ll be allowed to migrate to and work in Ireland, without first having to apply for a work permit. Non-Swiss, EEA and EU citizens, however, must first apply for a work permit and in certain cases, a visa as well.

SECURING AN IRELAND IMMIGRATION AND WORK PERMIT

When you register with the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service, you’ll be issued with an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) (INIS). Your certificate of registration will advise that the Immigration Review Panel (IRP), has officially approved your stay in Ireland.

HOW TO APPLY FOR YOUR IMMIGRATION PERMIT

The first step will be to determine the length of stay, for which the immigration visa will be required. Once the term has been decided, the applicant must then complete the relevant application form. For this the applicant will require:

• a copy of their work permits

• copies of passport, endorsements (stamps), and personal information

• a copy of their Irish Residence Permit or GNIB card

• a copy of any previous passport (with endorsements from Irish authorities), if a new passport was attained since entering Ireland 

Note: The average time for processing of a Residence Permit application, is six to eight months, but could take longer, depending on individual circumstances.  

 

WHERE TO APPLY FOR YOUR IMMIGRATION PERMIT

As soon as possible after arriving in Ireland, you should begin the process of registration. This must be done at your local Ireland Immigration Registration office.

Dublin residents can schedule an appointment at the Burgh Quay Registration office, by calling 1800 741741 (available Monday to Friday, from 08.00 am – 08.00 pm).

Where you reside, determines where you file the application.

Ireland residents must schedule an appointment online and appear in person at the Burgh Quay Registration office to register. 

Those people residing outside of Ireland, must make an appointment with their local Garda (registration office) and also appear in person to register. 

SECURING AN IRELAND WORK PERMIT

Your Irish Work Permit serves as a Work Visa. It allows non-EU workers to work legally in the country. The Visa covers specific occupations for an initial period of two years, after which it can be renewed. 

Only applicants who have a work offer from a company in Ireland, are eligible for a Work Visa. 

Note that a Work Permit and a Residence Permit are two separate legal requirements.

HOW TO APPLY FOR YOUR WORK PERMIT

The first step in the process is to determine the appropriate Work Permit required. There are several different options available and once the applicant has decided on an option, the appropriate application form must be completed. 

There is a shortlist of supporting documents required to accompany the application:

• Registration details

• Details of foreign nationality

• Details of redundancy

• Employment details

• Remuneration details

• Additional miscellaneous details

Applicants should receive a decision within a period of eight weeks from date of application. This is, however, subject to the speed of processing in different countries, and the volume of applications received at the time.

WHERE TO SUBMIT YOUR PERMIT APPLICATION

The private applicant, or the company that they work for, should apply for the Work Permit, at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Permits section).

Registration is done online, using the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS), where benchmarks for the General Employment Permit are provided as guidelines.

WHERE TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK PERMIT APPLICATION

Even if your application is progressing well, you will still have to apply for a Visa. That’s if you are from a country whos’ citizens required access to enter Ireland. If so, you’ll need to present your Employment Permit to the immigration officer at the airport or port of entry into Ireland. 

Upon arriving in Ireland, you’ll need to register with the local registration office in your intended area of residence. Once registered, you’ll receive a Residence Permit.

If you happen to be living in Ireland on another immigration permit, then you’ll need to go to your local registration office to change this.
